A Although the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics ended, what they have left us is still pushing sports development forward. The venues (场馆)for the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics belong not only to athletes-they belong to everyone who loves sports. With the follow-up plans ready to kick off,the public will soon be able to enjoy these venues.

 The National Aquatics Center

Also known as the Water Cube, the National Aquatics Center staged swimming events at the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics. It was later transformed into the Ice Cube for curling events at Beijing 2022.The transformation project enables the venue to switch between aquatic (水上的)and ice sports. The competition area at the Ice Cube will open for public visits and curling. The Olympic-standard ice sheets and visual parts of Beijing 2022 will be kept before it turns back into a swimming pool in the summer. There will also be more international events and training programs introduced as part of its plan for future use.

B My granddaughter entertains herself outside a closed shop.I have no idea what day it is - I haven"t known for 10 months.I have moved to a different city to provide child care so that my daughter can work.

Everything I observe these days is from a young child"s eye view.I must be experiencing time and place in a way I haven"t done before.I have let go of all the experiences we"re missing because I"m focused on what matters to this child at any given moment.Puddles (水洼),obviously.Rocks held lovingly in her small fist the whole way home.Burying balls that have sailed over the tennis court fence and landed in the sandbox, and her face lighting up when they are dug up.Every single lime.

My job is to wait and watch.Let her try things, comfort her when she falls down, and keep her safe.Bring snacks, push her on a swing, but mostly let her be.Tell her the names of all the things she points to.Take her hand when she offers it because she is in a slightly unfamiliar area. The two of us never hurry. This lifestyle change astonishes me every day.

Who knows how her new brain processes all this?I have been forced by circumstance into the arms of the people I need to take care of me.Taking care of my granddaughter is a .In fact, she gave me much more.

In March 2020,I lost my younger daughter.I can"t say it was entirely unexpected. My younger daughter battled mental illness. She was only 27 year old.She put herself through long treatment programs to reduce her pain.It was as if the whole world went on leave with me.I had company

for a few brief days after my younger daughters death, and then I was alone.I signed up for the various things that might reduce my suffering.I went 15 weeks without touching another person.

Now a very small girl waits for me,watches me,comforts me,keeps me safe, and takes my hand. 4. Why has the author lost track of time? ______

 A. It"s a child who has helped her to slowly recover. B. Staying with grandchildren is a comfort for elders. C. Family members should help each other out of pain. D. Physical separation has harmful effects on one"s health. C There is a photo in my collection that I pull out from time to time to remind myself of an old vacation. It"s a picture of me from the late 1970s on a bench in London"s Victoria Station,my head resting against a wall, eyes closed with tiredness, and clothes messed up.I used to love that shot taken by my wife.It was evidence of my leisure (休闲)time,of travel,of interruption from the office:miles covered, sights seen, train stations raced through, and goals achieved.

However,as I left work to hit the vacation road this summer,I took along something extra. This traveling companion had a habit of ruining trips with feelings of guilt-the guilt that came from attempting to vacation with work in mind.

The conflict between the time we want off and the guilt we feel when we actually give in to leisure is a long-running battle that has gone too far, driven by an overscheduling enthusiasm. It

第 4 页,共 21 页 has made many feel as if their free moments are a form of truancy (玩忽职守).It"s hard to take it easy when you"ve been programmed not to.We have been taught for generations that work is the only goal.Time that is unfilled is bad,we are led to believe, and unplanned enjoyment should be avoided. This is stressed today by a workplace culture that wants you to believe that advancement depends on your staying on the job.

Research now shows, however, that leisure time can do something job advancement and money can"t.Leisure activities increase your desire to work ,leadership skills, your sense of awareness and your ability to change.Free time also promotes a positive mood and sense of well-being,because it develops self-worth.Deep down, everyone knows we need time off to make our lives better.

On holiday, using your productive output as a measure of yourself doesn"t work. This is because a vacation isn"t about output;ifs about input - exploring, learning, reflecting. The magic of a holiday is in the experience itself. This is the same as life satisfaction;it can"t be measured, only felt. The best part of a vacation isn"t going somewhere else;it"s being where you are, fully involved in the experience. 8. Why does the author look at that photo from time to time? ______

 A. It brings back his memory of leisure travel. B. It describes his tired appearance on vacation. C. It gives evidence of his running away from work. D. It records a life goal achieved during his holiday. 9. What made the author feel guilty during this summer vacation? ______

 A. Reflect on their work. B. Avoid unplanned activities. C. Enjoy the experience of travelling. D. Ignore job advancement and money. D The Amazon rainforest is moving towards a tipping point past which trees will start to die off in large numbers, researchers have said.

The study, published in the Journal of Natural Climate Change, was conducted by scholars from the University of Exeter, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK)

and the Technical University of Munich. They used satellite data from 1991 to 2020 to examine trends in deforestation (毁林).

They calculated that 75% of the rainforest is now at risk of being unable to recover when experiencing droughts (旱灾),which are also increasingly more common due to global warming.

"Deforestation and climate change are likely to be the main drivers of this decline," Niklas Boers of PIK and the Technical University of Munich told the BBC.The study has predicted that it is only a matter of decades until a fairly large amount of the Amazon is transformed from rainforest into savannah(稀树草原).

The destruction (破坏)of the Amazon rainforest,in some ways caused by global warming, will also speed up . "The Amazon stores lots of carbon and all of that would enter the atmosphere, which would then further contribute to increasing temperatures and have future effects on global average temperatures,n Professor Boulton of the University of Exeter told the BBC.

This worrying snowball effect means that the destruction of the Amazon will make the much larger battle against global warming more difficult.

The destruction of the Amazon would also have a huge effect on the ecology of the earth. The Amazon rainforest is home to more than 30,000 species of plants,2.5 million species of insects,2,500 fish species, more than 1 ,500 bird species,550 reptiles, and 500 mammals, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society.A savannah environment that lacks a large variety of plant life, would be unable to host the large and varied ecosystems that currently exist in the rainforest. It is ...
